What is Voice of Choice?

For too long, the abortion discussion has been dominated by angry, nasty protests fueled by individuals and organizations that thrive on sensationalism and extremism. Now it is our turn.

‘Voice of Choice’ was established as a calm, measured response to anti-abortion activists who engage in misguided, raging protest tactics that are often ill-informed and only serve to victimize women, pro-choice professionals, law-abiding businesses and unaligned bystanders.

What do you do?

We use email, telephone and social media in peaceful, person-to-person counter-protests against groups that target abortion facilities, providers and patients, as well as their families and communities. We don’t question anyone’s right to express opinions and ideals; we challenge their bullying tactics and their contempt.

Why were we started?

Voice of Choice came to be when a father on the periphery of the abortion debate was dragged into the fray by an organized virtual mob of protesters calling him, emailing him and showing up at his daughter’s school. They were misguided and misinformed. Not only were these protesters acting on erroneous information, their unsavory efforts to blackball this parent within his community fell on deaf ears.

The protesters’ actions could only be called bullying. In response, hundreds of concerned community members leapt to this father’s defense by reaching out peacefully and individually to each of the protesters, most of whom regretted their thoughtless, mob-mentality accusations and aspersions.

Here is a Washington Post article describing the events of that day.

But this was only one incident. There are so many more examples of anti-choice arguments being bull-dozed through our communities with little to no organized response from the other side. Voice of Choice intends to be the voice of reason, building a grass-roots platform for unpolarized, pro-choice social action.

Where can I get more information about what is happening right now?

For the latest news and campaigns, you can follow us on FacebookTumblrTwitter and blog.

How do I get help for a victim that is nervous about coming forward?

The identities of the people who submit victim reports are completely, 100% confidential. If you know someone who has been victimized please email victims@vochoice.org with your detailed account of:

Who is the victim?
Why are they a victim?
What are they doing?
Do you have any photos, videos, or documents regarding any incidents?
Who is targeting them?
Is their a group
What are the names, emails, phone numbers or any other information about the people targeting our victim

We can organize a response to bullying behavior without involving the victim.

I want to help, but I don’t want the people I call to have my phone number. Is there a way I can remain anonymous on calls?

Yes! Please email members@vochoice.org and we would be happy to send you information on how this can be accomplished.

I want to help, but I don’t think calling people is right for me. Do you have any other areas in which you need help?

Yes! We are always looking for volunteers to help out with fundraising, research, social media, graphic design, and many other areas. Please register and let us know the areas in which you would like to help.

Is my donation to Voice of Choice tax deductible?

Voice of Choice is a registered 501(c)3 organization. Our federal ID number is 45-3309158. Your donation is most likely tax-deductible, but you should ask your tax advisor to be sure.

Are you currently working with any other pro-choice organizations?

We have the support of many other pro-choice organizations. We have received awards from NARAL and been asked to speak at other group’s conferences. However, we are independent and the way we approach the defense of abortion rights is unique.

Is VoC effective at stopping the harassment?

Very! Most people have who torment others know what they are doing is wrong. If we are able to identify them and hold them accountable for their behavior they usually disappear from anti-abortion activities.
